Lesson 21 Characters
Welcome to the first lesson of Chinese Reading and Writing 5! In this lesson, April shows how to read and write ten new Chinese characters and their meanings.
Also, two old characters are brought back for their second pronunciation and meaning. They are 校 and 了. Find out what their second pronunciation is and how to use these two old characters in new combinations.
Lesson 21 Words and Combinations
In this lesson, you’ll learn 65 words and combinations listed in the book. Some of them are important direction indicators in Chinese. April shows how to understand 起来, 来 and 去 when they are indicating directions of movement.
Read aloud these words and combinations, and copy them, until you have a good grasp.
Lesson 21 Practice
After learning new characters and words, it’s time for some practice, the most important part to improve Chinese reading and writing skills. There are 86 sentences under 72 index numbers and three interesting stories. Study them thoroughly.
In this lesson, April picks two sentences to demonstrate the usage of direction indicators of 来 and 去. She ends this lesson with an end-of-chapter challenge. You have two minutes to complete.

This lesson starts Lesson 22 in Chinese Reading and Writing 5. You’ll learn how to read and write ten new Chinese characters and their meanings.
Read these characters aloud, copy them, until you’re familiar with them. Get ready for the words and combinations at the next lesson.
Lesson 22 Words and Combinations
In this lesson, April presents 37 words and combinations, which are related to all of the ten new Chinese characters in Lesson 22 but one. The one that is not to be seen in these words and combinations is the character “吧”. The reason is that it is a particle and its meaning is to be best understood in a context.
Practice reading and writing these words until you’re fluent!
Lesson 22 Practice
It’s time for some practice. In this lesson, the focus is on how to understand the Chinese character “吧” when it functions as a particle in a sentence. Using three examples, April shows you her interpretations.
Work through all the exercises in the book, including 41 sentence under 37 index numbers, and two nice stories. After that, come back for an end-of-chapter challenge. You have two minutes to complete.

Lesson 23 starts here. You’ll be learning ten new Chinese characters, how to read them, how to write them, and their meanings.

Lesson 23 Words and Combinations
While learning Chinese characters is the first step, the second step will be to expand these new characters into words and combinations.
In this lesson you’ll learn 49 words and combinations. Everyone of them is comprised of characters you have learned. Make sure you spend some time and become fluent with these words and combinations.
Lesson 23 Grammar
In this lesson, April explains a super useful grammar point of how to use 把 to shift an object to a new position in the sentence, in front of the verb.
You probably want to ask, is it necessary to use this 把 structure. With added background information, April delves a little deeper into the purpose of this 把 sentence in Chinese and when it is called for.
Lesson 23 Practice
Learning new Chinese characters, plenty of words and useful grammar points, everything is built up for doing more exercises and for improving Chinese reading and writing skills! In the book, there are 66 sentences listed under 57 index numbers, and 2 nice stories. You’re going to like them!
In this lesson, April demonstrate a fun fact about Chinese, that the same two characters, when they are combined in different sequence, will have different meanings, such as 收回 and 回收. This is a good example to demonstrate the advantages of learning words over learning individual Chinese characters.

Lesson 24 Characters
This lesson starts Lesson 24 in Chinese Reading and Writing 5. You’ll learn ten new Chinese characters. One of them, “还”, is a special one. Its pronunciations and meanings depend on which characters it is in connection with.
One old character is brought back for the same reason, for you to learn its second pronunciation and meaning. This one is “分”.
Practice reading and writing these characters until you’re familiar with them.
Lesson 24 Words and Combinations
In this lesson, it’s time to expand your word bank, which is the key to understand Chinese texts.
There are 47 words and combinations listed in the book. Read them aloud, copy them, until you’re fluent.

It’s time for practice. Sufficient and level appropriate practice is the only way to improve your Chinese reading and writing skills. There are 85 sentences under 80 index numbers and 2 interesting stories in the exercise section. That’s a total of five A4 pages for you to practice.
In this lesson, April explains the literal meaning of the word “不客气”, demonstrating the best way to understand the meaning of words is in a given context. Hint, it’s not “you’re welcome”, or “don’t mention it”.

Lesson 25 Characters
In this lesson, April presents ten new Chinese characters, the final ones in Chinese Reading and Writing 5. One of them, “华”, is a special character. An old character, “差”, is brought back for its second pronunciation and usage. Pay attention to how to read them and the associated meanings.
You’ll have studied a total of 270 characters after this lesson, and 12 of them are special ones. Every one of them is highly useful.
Practice reading and writing all the new characters until you’re familiar with them.
Lesson 25 Words and Combinations
In this lesson, you’ll work on the second step of learning Chinese, expanding new characters into 52 words and combinations listed in the book.
Practice reading and writing them until you’re fluent.
Lesson 25 Grammar
In this lesson, April introduces the following four useful grammar points: 1) 才; 2) 自…以后; 3) 要么…,要么…; 4) 别 + V.. Of these grammar points, the first one, how to use 才 to express a certain perspective, is particularly interesting. You’re going to love them.
After the lesson, make sure you make some sentences of your own.
Lesson 25 Practice
It’s time for practice. Good, level appropriate practice is the key to improve your Chinese reading and writing skills, and this is something no one can do it for you. In the exercise section, there are 69 sentences under 65 index numbers, and two interesting stories. Study everything thoroughly.
In this lesson, April picks two sentences, both of them have the Chinese character 才, and demonstrates that the best way to understand the meaning of Chinese characters is in sentences.
