WeChat Social Media Chinese Course
By the first quarter of 2019, Tencent’s WeChat had over one billion monthly active users. It is China’s most popular mobile App, the primary source for Chinese people to chat and share with friends, to play games, to make calls, to send money, and to read news. It is a self-contained social network.
What we are interested in this Chinese course are the articles published by some influential WeChat official accounts. There are over 20 million official accounts on WeChat, acting as an effective platform for media, government bodies, companies and celebrities to distribute their content to their followers and to interact with them directly.
Many articles are timely published to address the hottest topics in China. By reading and discussing some of these articles, students are able to get a glimpse of the general sentiment of Chinese people and comprehend the stance of the Chinese government on many social and political issues.
Moreover, different from traditional media, articles published on WeChat platform usually adopt a very casual style, imbedded with many internet memes and the latest unique expressions. Studying these articles provides a powerful way for students to stay current with how Chinese language has added new expressions and has made use of other languages in the social media age.
This Chinese course is an advanced course, and requires students have a fair command of Chinese. It is ideal for students who have completed Mandarin Express Intermediate Level A, or equivalent, to further their Chinese study.
