Join the discussion: Did the Oscars 2024 present us the best films?

The Oscars 2024 was just over.

The film "Oppenheimer" was a major winner, taking home awards in several major categories including Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Picture.

Do you think that was a good pick? Why or why not?

Come and join the “What Is Your Opinion” session and share your move preference and more.

It was considered historic wins for Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. both to win their first Oscars for their roles in “Oppenheimer”.

But I personally find it hard to follow the movie Oppenheimer. My lack of understanding of its historic context might be the reason. I also prefer simpler story telling techniques.

There are also some controversy.

One is the absence of a Best Director nomination for Greta Gerwig for the movie Barbie. There are therefore discussions about potential biases within the Academy.

Another one is ethnic Chinese actors were snubbed by their colleagues during the ceremony.

What do you think?

Of course, there were also the political tensions.

The ceremony became a place for people to present their views on the ongoing geopolitical conflicts.

In particular, the Oscars recognised the film “The Zone of Interest,” which won the award for Best International Film. The director, Jonathan Glazer, used his acceptance speech to condemn war.

What do you think?

If you have interesting ideas about what happened during the Oscars 2024 and also love a chance to practice speaking about them in Mandarin, this is your chance.

More about this course:

“What Is Your Opinion” is a platform for high level Chinese language learners to share their views and thoughts on a wide range of events which are shaping our world, and of course, to practice speaking Mandarin as well.

This course is a natural extension for students who have completed the Mandarin Express series (or equivalent) and would like to have a platform to further their study by engaging in topical discussions.

It’s best for students who are interested in world events, including but not solely about events which China’s stances influence the outcome.
