Smile, Chinese Reading and Writing 3 online course has completed and is ready for viewing! This course includes 21 video lessons, teaching 50 Chinese characters ( two of them are special ones which have two different readings), 179 words and combinations, and 14 important Chinese grammatical points.

These online lessons are a continuation of the previous two online courses, Chinese Reading and Writing 1 & 2. We are on the path of producing online lessons for the entire Chinese Reading and Writing series. The difference between these lessons and many other lessons on the internet is that these lessons not only teach students Chinese characters, but also teach them comprehensive reading and writing skills. Indeed, it is easy to teach a handful of characters, but it is hard to teach how to read and write Chinese texts.

There is a common misconception about the connections between Chinese characters and Chinese texts, that Chinese texts are made up with 2000-3500 Chinese characters. This misconception seems right, but it is not. It is like claiming that English texts are made up with 26 letters. The truth is that learning 26 letters is only the first step. 26 letters alone will not get us anywhere. Using the same logic, learning 2000-3500 characters will not equip anyone to be able to read Chinese texts. Different from learning 26 letters, learning 2000-3500 Chinese characters is certainly much more difficult.

This is the first contribution that the Chinese Reading and Writing series made to learners of Chinese worldwide. The entire series limits the usage of characters, teaching only 320 essential ones.

Between Chinese characters and Chinese texts, there is a crucial element, which links characters and texts, and that element is words and combinations. Word and combinations are the building blocks of Chinese texts, and should be at the center of everyone’s study.

This is the second contribution that the series of Chinese Reading and Writing books made, teaching sufficient words and combinations to train beginner students to read and write Chinese texts. Before, students have to come to MSL Master to study these courses. Now they don’t have to. They’ll have access to these courses online. So far the first three online courses are completed. The other three will come gradually.

Besides words and combinations, level appropriate grammar points are explained whenever necessary.

These online lessons will enable students to work on all the exercises in the textbooks, truly read and write Chinese texts, truly develop their Chinese language skills. Doing exercises is really the fun part, where students get rewarded and see their gradual and steady progress lesson after lesson. This is also where students lead in their own study, and where teacher’s hardcore teaching ends.

For those who are up for more exercises, supplementary worksheets (PDF) are available for purchase.
