The hexagram of modesty: Your anchor in turbulent times

Hexagram “谦” explained!

The eight trigrams, formed by stacking yin (阴, represented by a broken line --) and yang (阳, represented by a solid line —), give us eight natural phenomena, each mirroring a life scenario with its unique strengths and pitfalls.

Stack one trigram atop another, and you get 64 hexagrams. Each consists of six yin or yang lines, totalling 384 lines across all hexagrams. These form the heart of the I Ching, the classic Book of Changes.

Every hexagram paints a picture of how two natural forces interconnect, depicting a specific situation and its six evolving stages.

Countless words have been written interpreting these 64 hexagrams and their lines. Here, I’ll focus on just one—the key to unbreakable resilience in our era of relentless change: 谦 (qiān), “modesty.”

This is the only hexagram where every line promises good fortune. It’s a profound signal from ancient Chinese wisdom: modesty guides you to success, no matter your position.

The composition and image of 谦 (qiān)

䷎ : Modesty

Upper trigram:☷ Earth (坤 kūn)

Lower trigram:☶ Mountain (艮 gèn)

Picture a mountain concealed beneath the earth. Inside: steady and majestic like a peak. Outside: smooth and inclusive like the soil.

This image tells us that modesty isn’t mere politeness, weakness, or retreat. Modesty is a strategic powerhouse—grossly underestimated in our age of endless self-promotion. A hidden mountain offers a counterintuitive antidote to the spotlight-chasing norm.

All six lines of this hexagram show how modesty leads to good outcomes. I’ve selected three to unpack, grounding them in today’s world. Each equips you to weather storms and to succeed.

#1 The power of self-constraint

“谦谦君子,用涉大川,吉。”

The modest virtuous person, doubly so, can cross great rivers. Good fortune.

This is from the bottom line of the hexagram to mark the beginning.

谦, modesty. It is repeated twice, 谦谦, doubling down on modesty.

大川, great rivers, symbolise danger or daunting challenges.

In our world: You’re starting fresh in a new job or city. You’re capable, but you keep a low profile—listening, learning, collaborating. This builds trust, knowledge, and growth without risky splashes. It’s the safest path through uncertainty.

#2 The power of active engagement

“劳谦,君子有终,吉。”

The accomplished yet modest virtuous person endures to the end. Good fortune.

This third line (middle stage) is the hexagram’s only yang line, signifying pure strength.

劳谦, pairs hard-won achievements “劳” with modesty “谦”.

Today: You’ve risen from newbie to key player, driving team or company wins. Yet you stay modest, crediting others sincerely. This wins lasting loyalty—you’ll stick around for the long haul, respected and indispensable.

#3 The power of strategic harsh measures

“鸣谦,利用行师,征邑国。”

Famous for modesty, it benefits one to deploy troops and conquer realms.

It is from the top line of the hexagram and it is the pinnacle.

鸣谦, famous for modesty. This reputation earns the right to bold action, like marching armies against rigid foes.

行师, marching troops. It signifies strong and harsh measures.

Some readers may be puzzled. Modesty enabling toughness? That seems to be contradictory to each other. Let’s turn to a real master, Deng Xiaoping, to fully appreciate how important modesty is.

Deng achieved greatness but always stayed low-key, driven by his lifelong pursuit of making China prosperous. His integrity was unquestioned.

In the late 1970s and 1980s, he spearheaded reforms shifting China from a planned to a market economy. As a result, state firms were closed or forced to pivot, and millions were laid off. It was painful—like waging war on entrenched systems.

Yet people endorsed it, even those hit hardest. Why? Deng’s proven capability (the mountain) and renowned modesty (the earth) built unbreakable trust. They believed his harsh steps were necessary and would lead to a brighter future.

Today’s China has proved that Deng was right. And Deng, as a role model of being modest, teaches us that modesty isn’t for the weak. It’s the leader’s edge—fuelling reforms others couldn’t touch.

Conclusion

From rookie to reformer, 谦 shows how modesty builds supreme resilience. It is adaptive and self-restraint, also bold and strong.

Master this hexagram, and you gain a stealthy tool to stay steady amid chaos. In our turbulent era, modesty isn’t old-fashioned—it’s your secret weapon.
