Reading a long Chinese article

  • Aim:

    This class activity encourages students to get involved in reading, comprehending and discussing long articles written in Chinese. 

    Actively participating in the activity helps students develop their Chinese reading comprehensions and analytical skills. Students are expected to do researches and to deliver presentations in Chinese as a form of their contributions to the class and to their own learning.

How does it work

  • Preparation:

    Direct students to the first section of the Chinese texts.

  • Procedure:
    1. Organise students into small groups of two or three.
    2. Ask each group to work together to find out the meanings of the listed words.
    3. In each group, students search for the meaning of each word and practicing explaining these words in Chinese.
    4. Teachers walk around the class and monitor the progress.
    5. After students understand all the words, they will have a basic idea on what the reading is about. Revert the classroom arrangement to the whole class setting.
    6. Teachers direct students to read the article. Asking and answering questions about the article. Encouraging students to share their views on the topics.
    7. Teachers proceed to the following two follow ups.

  • Follow up 1:

    Teachers organise students into small groups of two or three. Ask each group to discuss the questions presented in the Chinese textbook. And later students work individually and write down their opinions. Teachers walk around the class and monitor the progress.

    Once everyone is finished, teachers invite five or six students to read their writings to the whole class.

  • Follow up 2:

    Teachers organise students into small groups of two or three. Based on the article, each group will select a point of interest and do some research on it. As a group, students will prepare and present a five-minute presentation in Chinese to the whole class.
